    Year of registration: 1985
    Organizational structure: Sigma was organized in 1922 and became incorporated in 1985 as a nonprofit organization with a 501(c)(3) tax status in the United States. The Sigma Board of Directors consists of 11 voting members and the Chief Executive Officer. The 11 elected voting members are the president, president-elect, vice president, secretary, treasurer, Regional Chapters Coordinating Committee chair, and five directors. Elections for the board take place at Sigma's biennial conventions. Internal work of the organization is led by the CEO and 7 Directors, the work of the organization is conducted in the areas of Global Initiatives, Educational Resources, Scholarship Resources, Marketing and Communications, Information Technology, Member Services, Finance, Development and Awards, and Business Administration. Other business subsidiaries of Sigma include The International Honor Society of Nursing Building Corporation, Sigma Marketplace, and the Sigma Foundation for Nursing.
    Number and type of members: Potential members who meet our eligibility criteria are invited to join Sigma – baccalaureate and graduate nursing students who demonstrate excellence in scholarship and to nurse leaders exhibiting exceptional achievements in nursing. Additional facts about our membership are: Sigma has more than 100,000 active members, residing in more than 100 countries. Thirty-nine % of active members hold master’s and/or doctoral degrees; 51% are in staff positions; 19% are administrators or supervisors; 18% are faculty/academics; and 12% percent are in advanced practice. There are roughly 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and healthcare partners from Armenia, Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, England, Finland, Ghana, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Malawi, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Sigma communicates regularly with more than 100 nurse leaders who have expressed interest in establishing chapters globally.
    Affiliation with NGO networks: Sigma partners with many NGO's around the world, including the International Council of Nurses, the World Health Organization, and other bodies or agencies of the United Nations. Sigma has a long history of collaboration with leading nursing organizations
