Mission statement:
The International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) is a global service provider and a leading advocate of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. It is a worldwide movement of national organizations working in 171 countries with and for communities and individuals. In Africa, it operates through a network of Member Associations in 44 countries in sub-Sahara Africa that provide a wide range of sexual and reproductive health services and information to men and women from diverse social and economic backgrounds. These Member Associations are nationally-owned as they are governed and led by committed and competent national staff and volunteers based at the grassroots level, who freely give their expertise and services. Because they are independent entities, the Member Associations are sensitive to the needs of the communities they serve. The Region also promotes homegrown solutions to reproductive health challenges and ensures that services and programmes are centred around the needs of youth and women, as well as marginalized, poor and under-served people. The Member Associations also work in partnerships with international, national and local institutions in their respective countries. IPPF Africa Region is committed to building the capacity of its African Member Associations, supporting them in their efforts to become strong, efficient and sustainable national organizations that deliver high quality sexual and reproductive health services, with integrated HIV and AIDS programmes. Recognizing the outstanding leadership that some Member Associations have demonstrated in particular areas of work, the Africa Region has established a number of learning centres in selected Member Associations to share good practices and lessons learned with other Member Associations and other non-governmental organizations working in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Through this strong network of Member Associations in the continent and through it collaborative work with key stakeholders, IPPF Africa Region has contributed significantly to putting sexual and reproductive health at the forefront of most African development agenda. IPPF Africa Region which enjoys observer status with the African Union and has a diplomatic status agreement with the Government of Kenya, therefore fulfills a vital role in advocating for greater financial and political support for sexual and reproductive health and rights among policy and decision-makers. Over the past five years, IPPF Africa Region working in collaboration with key stakeholders including the African Union Commission and UNFPA Africa Division, gave voice to the concerns of the people it serves by ensuring that their needs were reflected in the Continental Policy Framework on Sexual and Reproductive Health and its plan for implementation–the Maputo Plan of Action, as well as the Africa Health Strategy: 2007 - 2015. These agreements were approved by the African Heads of State and governments.
