Mission statement:
Business and Entrepreneurship Support Tanzania (BEST) is a registered Non Governmental Organization working in Tanzania since 2001. It has a vision of a community of equal opportunities empowered to manage economic and social development activities sustainably. BEST is committed to socio-economic empowerment of small-scale entrepreneurs through business management training and consultancy, gender awareness raising and provision of credit The overall goal of BEST is to alleviate poverty among the micro-entrepreneurs and small scale farmers through the provision of gender sensitive business management skills, advisory services and enable them to access credit. BEST Target Micro-entrepreneurs, the majority being poor women with or without income generating activities and poor peasants practicing farming with a business approach. To accomplish her mission BEST is sensitizing the poorest of the poor to become micro-entrepreneurs. The sensitized poorest and the micro-entrepreneurs are then trained on business management and provided with seed capital and micro-loans to start up micro-businesses. Close follow up is done to the trained micro-entrepreneurs to advise and supervise their micro businesses. Loans are given in phases to make sure the micro-entrepreneurs graphs are positively grow. Supervision visits are done to ensure that the skills obtained from the training are effectively utilized. Achievements: The trained poorest of the poor are aware of poverty and are taking actions. This shows that millennium development goal no 1 might be achieved in the sense that people can work themselves to reduce the extreme poverty which is not tolerable. Reaching poor is the evidence that people can alleviate poverty. What is needed is support from the haves. BEST has learned that supporting poorest of the poor is a critical point to start fighting poverty. That is reality because fighting poverty at the middle level living the extreme poor behind is segregation and creating classes of people. Pooling the poorer to the middle is the way of bridging the gape. Increasing the level of household income is another feature that is recognized. This is highly seen from the substantial changes in the living styles especially changes of diet, clothing and school attendance per household. Decision making especially women with income is additional evidence that poverty is a hindering block. Before entrepreneurial interventions it is hard to see women speaking in front of men or the rich. When women own income they really talk, air their views and fight for their rights. The issues of shyness disappear due to economic empowerment. The crosscutting issues like the HIV/AIDS are given to the micro entrepreneurs as the means of sensitizing them about the disease and also have an opportunity of knowing causes and thus become aware on how to prevent the disease. An example is a woman who is HIV positive who decided to be open to community and initiated the campaign of fighting the disease. It is not always easy to tell public that someone is living with the virus. Due to empowerment that woman finds it normal and wondering why others are afraid of being open because through openness a person will secure support.
