Tomas Daniels- Secretary VISION Respect for Human Rights and good Governance in Africa MISSION Resource mobilization for advocacy, and assistance on the respect for Human Rights and attainment of good governance in Africa. CORE VALUES Professionalism Political impartiality Respect for Human Rights STRATEGIC POSITIONING The Center for Rights and Governance enjoys a unique position in the society. It is the only organizations in the society whose impact is felt through the following activities. o Conducting Legal Aid and Advisory Clinics and thus ensures access to justice for the general public who may not be able to access and afford legal representation; o Supporting the evolution and growth of an institutional framework that will motivate members of the public to voluntarily participate in governance and affairs of their countries, with defined focus on Kenya. This especially after the Post Election violence in Kenya after which citizens were unwilling to voluntarily participate in their civic duties, e.g., elections. This has been our focus during the first and second quarter of the year, when a referendum vote on the constitution of Kenya is expected; o Working closely with election monitoring and observation missions locally and regionally to develop training materials and observation instruments, train election observations and compile monitoring and observation reports; o Acting as a resource and information centre in furtherance of the objectives of the organization; o Addressing the political, economic and tribal conflicts that are common in African communities; o Facilitating researches of accessing the basic human rights through ensuring good governance; o Offering chances for the legally disadvantaged needy to access their legal human rights; o Focusing on the importance of legal empowerment as a long-term strategy to eradicate poor governance. ACTIVITIES (i) Research and Background Explorations Research is a built-in, continuous feature of the organization. To ensure that the organization stays afloat in matters of Governance and Human Rights matters, research is a major activity that the organization undertakes in its areas of operation. Example: the current publications of the organization include: ‘An Exploration of the Status of Human Rights in Sierra Leone’ This publication seeks to explore both the historical background and the current status of Human Rights in Sierra Leone. It further explores the process of recovery of the Republic from the Civil War which took place in 1991-2002. The impact of the Special Court for Sierra Leone is also closely examined. ‘Jurisprudence of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda’ is also a current publication of the organization. It examines the cases already dealt with and completed by the Tribunal, noting the Human Rights issues arising. It further considers whether an International Tribunal is the best way of dealing with crimes of International Law committed within a state. Our research is multi-faceted, and creates a great resource for the organization. It enables the organization chart its strategic plan in line with clear objectives. Our outcomes thus reflect the influence of good research. (ii) Data Gathering The organization seeks to uphold grassroots participation in governance and Human Rights affairs of their country. It this collects data from the grassroots. Example: Focus Group Discussions in relation to important provisions in the proposed constitution. The Focus Group Discussions we composed of various representatives from various interest groups, e.g. youth groups, women’s self help groups, small and mediums enterprises business people, and the disabled.
