Geneva University Department of Political Science and International Relations

Geographic scope:	International
Mission statement:	Founded in 1969 and with about 50 teachers/researchers, the Department is the teaching and research unit in Political Science of the University of Geneva. Its members do their research work in the main fields of contemporary political science, and often in collaboration or integrated into the networks of international research. They widely benefit from the support of the Fond national de la recherche scientifique (FNRS) and other foundations. They are also active in: the International Association of Political Science (IPSA), the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR), the Swiss Association of Political Science (ASSP), as well as in other such societies. Many of them are regularly invited to give their expertise, especially in public administration and international organizations. The members of the Department are mainly involved in teaching and research in Political Science, a scientific discipline being part of the big family of Social Sciences and trying to understand the meaning of "society" ("how can a society at all be possible"), how it functions, towards what future it takes us. Among the most permanent phenomena of all societies is power, an omnipresent and mysterious object, the capacity that certain men have (those you "have" the power and those who "are" in power) to command the others and to force them to accomplish things which otherwise they would not have accomplish, such as pay their income tax, or go to War. Political Science is particularly focusing on this phenomenon of power which is so pertinent in all societies. With about 800 students, the Department of Political Science is responsible for the organization of : the Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (Bachelor), the Master of Arts in Political Science (Master), as well as the Doctorate (PhD) in Economic and Social Sciences, mention Political Science. For the preparation of these diplomas, the Department collaborates with the other Departments of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences with the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Letters. These numerous collaborations with economists, statisticians, legal advisory, historians, philosophers clearly show the statute of Social Sciences and of Political Science in particular: the necessity to mobilize very different knowledge in order to attempt to understand the immense complexity of the social and the political.

Organizational structure:	The Department of Political Science belongs to the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences.This Faculty is itself composed of three sections and of a department directly linked to the Dean's Office: - the section of Higher Commercial Studies (HEC) - the section of Economic Sciences (Econometry and Political Economy) - the section of Social Sciences (Geography, Economic History, Sociology) - the Department of Information Systems. The Department of Political Science belongs to the Section of Social Sciences together with the Department of Sociology, Economic History and Geography.
