EQUIS: Justicia para las Mujeres was established in 2010 by feminist human rights activists with ample experience in this field at the national and international level. The organization was created in response to the current challenges in relation to the protection of the human rights of women and with the objective to contribute new perspectives and strategies in order to improve accountability, transparency and women’s access to justice in Mexico. Since its founding, the Instituto de Liderazgo Simone de Beauvoir (ILSB), a leading women’s civil society organization and a key ally in the feminist movement, has served as an incubator for EQUIS. This has allowed EQUIS to see its long term viability with the vision to evolve into a fully independent organization dedicated to advancing access to justice for women. Through the institutional framework of the ILSB, EQUIS has designed and implemented various projects in this time period which have revealed the capability of EQUIS to function as a separate organization. EQUIS has already been able to achieve significant advances despite the lack of resources and the short time span since the initiation of its activities. In 2011, EQUIS: Justicia para las Mujeres was formally and legally constituted and began the process of operating as an independent organization dedicated to advancing women’s human rights. |
