Mission statement:
Improve life conditions of vulnerable communities, through na integrated and evidence based approach, promoting citizenship. Our mission is aligned with the following work principles: (1) Research Our goal is to cognise/apprehend/comprehend the phenomena we work with as the base mechanism for a scientifically supported intervention. We privilege a matrix of action-research, based, on the one hand, in the comprehension and critical reflection on social reality and, on the other hand, in the intervention in the processes of change. (2) Participative methodologies We promote the recognition and involvement (as well as co-acceptance of responsibility) of all the participants in the processes of development. Outreach intervention We adopt interventions that actively involve the population and the territories, by positively acting in people’s lives. (3) Advocacy Our goal is to empower and give voice to the population, by promoting social mobility for a more participative and critical democracy. Our goal is to have some influence in citizenship and territorial development political agendas, in a permanent dialogue with civil society. (4) Evaluation We systematically evaluate our intervention in terms of performance and impact and we are always looking to optimise our work. For example, most of our projects are based on an action-research methodology. (5) Interdisciplinary approach We believe that the broader and diverse the analysis perspectives are, the better the phenomena are understood. We integrate workers from several fields of knowledge that are distinct and complement each other: Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Anthropology, Nursing, Biology, Economics and Management. Seeking for a transdisciplinary approach to the social phenomena, we have about 60 workers from different scientific areas - Psychology, Sociology, Social Service, Anthropology, Nursing, Chemistry, Economy and Administration. Our core principles are: Human Rights Protection, Action Research and Evaluation Methodologies, Participative and Proximity Models of Intervention; Empowerment and Citizenship; Activism and Policy Action; Transdisciplinary Approaches. Therefore, APDES role is oriented to: (a) providing proximal intervention services to vulnerable people and communities in national and international contexts; (b) producing critical understanding and research on the health and social reality and (c) advocating for fair health and social policies. As so, we believe in an all-inclusive intervention, bringing together 3 different dimensions of work: Service provision, Research and Advocacy. APDES has been playing an important role in the national landscape by innovating in several intervention fields, namely in the sex work field and in the drug phenomenon, and by working internationally with numerous partners in the development of research and intervention networks, in order to improve the work done in these areas and to share good practices.
