Mission statement:	Imvrian Association was established in 1945 as the successor of Imvrian Union of Piraeus, formed by Imvrian refugees in 1923, having as main aim to maintain the links among Imvrians living in Athens and Attica. The majority of Imvrians, however, settled in Greece between 1964 and 1980, following the implementation of “Dissolution Program” by the Turkish authorities which resulted in the departure of almost the whole of the Greek population of the islands of Imvros (renamed Gokceada) and Tenedos (renamed Bozcaada). The high degree of cohesion between the exiled Imvrians that was achieved as a result of the vocation of Imvrian associations around the world allowed the enhancement of their links with their native island since the 1990’s. Thousands of Imvrians now visit the island during summer reuniting with their relatives from around the world and reviving the island’s traditional customs and feasts. Many of these Imvrians and their families have restored and settled again in their ancestral homes. The improvement of conditions for Imvrians, including steps to provide restitution for or otherwise address past and current injustices and safeguard equal treatment and non-discrimination could induce the return of an even larger number of Imvrians to their native land. Imvrian Association is the largest association of Imvrians worldwide. Its privately owned building in Nea Smyrni, Greece serves as a welcoming gathering place for all Imvrians, as a hub of information and education on the Imvrian cause. The common vision of Imvrians is their peaceful co-existence and productive reintegration into their native land and the protection and preservation of their identity and cultural heritage that have survived for over 2,500 years. In addition to these goals, Imvrian Association's mission extends also to that of an NGO pursuing humanitarian and other forms of aid, social and economic development, implementation of human rights, social care, environmental and gender equality related projects.
