Mission statement:
A few people met in Santa Clara, California, USA in 1996 to ponder one idea: channeling the generosity of Santa Clara Community and other people of goodwill in North America to nurture hope for individuals and communities in West Africa. The Ihsan Foundation was born on that day! With humble donations, Ihsan started its work in the basement of a local house in Freetown, Sierra Leone to provide after school lessons to disadvantaged children. Every year, with the support of people like you, Ihsan slowly extended help to more needy children in what was then the world’s poorest country. Then Sierra Leone’s rebel war intensified. With half of the population of the country becoming refugees, thousands of children being orphaned, and thousands more of innocent civilians being killed or mutilated; with the few health and educational institutions being destroyed; “Sierra Leone” became referred to “as another name for hell.” When the war ended in 2002, Ihsan dedicated the donations of a growing number of sympathizers to rebuilding lives and communities in Sierra Leone. Celebrating Ihsan’s 20th anniversary this year, actually means celebrating your generosity, which has enabled us to create community based institutions and programs in the areas of education, health care, orphan care and relief in all four regions of Sierra Leone. Ihsan has also been steadily expanding its work in the West African region, and currently has institutions or programs in Guinea, Ghana, Niger, Cameroon and Nigeria. We are now in the process of developing our work in Cameroon with the establishment of the Ihsan Academy of Cameroon and initiating the support of thirty orphans in the same country. As we celebrate your generosity this year, we feel that your efforts will be more meaningful if we get you to see more concretely the difference they are making. We are, therefore, launching IHSAN TIMES. This first issue seeks to give a broad understanding of the work. The focus is, therefore, the program overview. Subsequent issues will be lighter in content, and feature the lives of the individuals your generosity is touching; the communities you are transforming. We will also have a Readers’ Section, in which we shall feature a sampling of your comments, as well as answers to the questions you raise. IHSAN TIMES will thus serve as a community meeting place; a rendez-vous of hearts and minds. Other interesting ideas are in gestation. We, your partners at Ihsan, thank you for your generosity over the years and count on your continued support as we embrace new opportunities to expand the horizons of hope for individuals and communities in West Africa. Please share IHSAN TIMES with friends and relatives, and contribute to the growth of the Ihsan family.
