Mission statement:	ROOTA is a Canadian charity whose mission is to alleviate poverty and enhance education. ROOTA is currently supporting the marginalized community of trash collectors in Egypt, commonly referred to as The Zabaleen, by working with our boots on the ground. The Zabaleen are a marginalized community of farmers who migrated into upper Egypt in 1940's aspiring for better life. They settled in Mokhatam a suburb of Cairo and are around 50,000 living by sifting through garbage. ROOTA offers programs on literacy to adults such as the Condensed Literacy Education (CLE) program which is a nine months program after which the participants sit for a government exam and the rate of success is around 75%.. We also offer tutoring classes for drop out youth who often skip school to help their parents with sifting through garbage. ROOTA offers income generating projects for young women to allow them to be economically independent ROOTA is offering after school tutoring classes and classes for those who dropped out of school for certain circumstances. Women in this culture are often encouraged to join the family in sifting through garbage rather than going to school. Hence, we initiated a program called Earn and Learn where girls and women are encouraged to learn an income generating project such as working on looms, sewing machines, glass recycling. They are then offered literacy classes if they wish and often girls see the benefit of education and in most cases would like to ameliorate their economic situation and are eager to attend the after-school programs for literacy or the CLE Program. By doing that ROOTA attempts to change the balance of equality in this marginalized community where women and girls have no voice and hence no say in the family unit.
