Mission statement:
AlfaSol (Solidarity in Literacy) is a Brazilian non-governmental not-for-profit organization, aimed at disseminating and strenghtening social development through sustainable educational practices. The main work of the Organization regards a contribution towards diminishing high illiteracy rates among the population over 15 years of age and the fostering of the public offer of continuing Youth and Adult Education (YAE) in the country. AlfaSol concentrates its actions in regions characterized by low Municipal Human Development Indexes – HDI-M and high illiteracy rates, be they rural or urban. Since its creation, AlfaSol (Solidarity in Literacy) has been concentrating efforts to assist places displaying low Human Development Indexes and high illiteracy rates. Illiteracy, as well known, is a serious social problem, reaching millions of persons all over the world and contributing to increase social exclusion and to limit the exercise of citizenship. In fourteen years of operation in Brazil, AlfaSol served more than 5.5 million individuals historically excluded from the schooling process and living in a situation of social vulnerability, in 2.123 municipalities, where over 255 thousand literacy teachers have been trained. Based on its successful results in Brazil, AlfaSol started dedicating itself to international cooperation as well. Since 2000, AlfaSol has been developing international technical cooperation projects with Cape Verde, East Timor, Guatemala, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe, in partnership with the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC, for its name in Portuguese: Agência Brasileira de Cooperação), of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations. The international work of AlfaSol has as its fundamental premise the respect for the culture and reality of the partner countries, contributing towards strengthening constructive relationships between developing countries. AlfaSol’s international cooperation projects, as well as its national actions, are aimed at fostering the public offer of Youth and Adult Education (YAE) in the countries benefitted by this.
