Statements or documents submitted
to the Commission on Social Development:
ISPO is an organization which draws its membership from those who are professionally concerned with the care and treatment of persons with disability. Thus any UN activity which would relate to this area would be of direct interest to ISPO. Because of our particular focus we have a more active linkage with WHO. This does not preclude a strengthening of our relationship with UN, and the first step would be to identify a contact person within the UN organisations with whom we could explore possibilities.
Purpose of the organization: The International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) will: 1.1 serve as an international impartial and non-political coordinating, correlating and advisory body on prosthetics, orthotics, rehabilitation engineering and other matters related to the neuromuscular and skeletal system in close collaboration with other national and international bodies, offering appropriate guidance and advice to these bodies to avoid unwitting duplication of effort and to encourage maximum use of resources. 1.2 effect a scientific exchange among its members and others by collecting and disseminating information through publications, correspondence, exhibits, regional or international courses, seminars, symposia, conferences, staff efforts or otherwise. 1.3 encourage, promote and when requested, assist in efforts to co-ordinate or guide research, development, and evaluation activities related to prosthetics and orthotics throughout the world. ISPO works worldwide to enhance the quality of life for people with physical disabilities who require improvements in mobility or independence, by: •Promoting clinically relevant research and evidence based practice •Facilitating development of innovative and appropriate technologies •Conducting high quality continuing education programs •Developing international guidelines for the education of prosthetists and orthotists •Publishing peer reviewed information in journal, text, and electronic formats •Fostering cooperation and exchange of ideas worldwide
