Purpose: The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is primarily a human rights advocacy group, involved in research and training. The Institute has built up a major network of human rights advocates and experts throughout the region and acted for some time as the Secretariat for the incipient Arab Regional Working Group for Human Rights.
Illustrative Project: CIHRS has contributed to the Egyptian NGOs campaign against female circumcision by: carrying out applied and field research on the cultural roots of two groups: medical doctors, and a village; issuing two promotional books on this subject; participating in workshops for developmental NGOs on this question; collaborating with other NGOs in bringing cases before the court. In 1999, it organised, in collaboration with the Moroccan Organisation for Human Rights, the First International Conference of the Arab Human Rights Movement. The advancement of this movement has been a constant concern of CIHRS.
