Under the auspices of the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the context of United Nations Security Council resolution 1244 (1999), in 2006 IFFAMPAC was appointed Observer Status to the United Nations Working Group on Persons who are Unaccounted for in Connection with Events in Kosovo. Because of this appointment, IFFAMPAC was able to provide information to the Kosovo families on the status of their missing family members. IFFAMPAC also worked closely with the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and its Office for Missing Persons and Forensics. IFFAMPAC provided information to the UNMIK on the locations of possible gravesites to be excavated by the Office for Missing Persons and Forensice. IFFAMPAC was appointed Observer Status to the Government Commission on Missing Persons in Kosovo on 1 April 2008. The Office of the Prime Minister appointed IFFAMPAC to this UNMIK-guided Commission to draft legal reforms concerning the development and establishment of social programs on a continuing basis. IFFAMPAC has participated in and spoken at international conferences themed around an aspect of social development. IFFAMPAC’s president addressed the ICRC’s International Conference of Governmental and Non-Governmental Experts on the Missing Persons in Geneva, Switzerland, on 19 February 2003. IFFAMPAC’s president also presented a speech, titled “In Search of Answers: Effective Resolutions” at the International Commission of Missing Persons’ International Models of Transitional Justice Conference in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, on 6 December 2005. At the WANGO 2007 conference, themed “Ethics and Global Peace: NGO Perspectives,” IFFAMPAC’s president gave a speech titled “The Role of NGOs in Advancing Peace in Areas of Conflict” on 10 November 2007. On 21 April 2008, she also gave a speech, titled “Seeking Justice for the Missing: Helping Families Stay Together,” at the WANGO 2008 conference. The conference was themed “NGOs as Agents of Positive Change,” and IFFAMPAC also presented two workshops, one on family and one on social and economic development, at the conference. IFFAMPAC also participated in World Family Organization (WFO) conferences. On 1 December 2008, IFFAMPAC’s president delivered a speech, titled ”Assisting Families with Missing Persons from Armed Conflicts: Milestones of Success,” at the 2008 WFO conference, which was themed “Lives in the Balance: Ensuring the Rights to Survival, to Protection, and to Development.” The conference was held in Cairo, Egypt. IFFAMPAC also attended the 2009 WFO conference, themed “Families in Balance: Achieving Gender Equality and Women Empowerment,” and held in Istanbul, Turkey, on 4-7 December 2009. IFFAMPAC’s field activities in Africa have focused on social development through programs that provide children with schoolbooks, empower women through skills training, educate families about HIV/AIDS, and counsel young women bearing children on maternal care. The following are highlighted for significance: 1. Formed two family associations of missing persons, Lusaka, Zambia, 2008, which create ongoing opportunities for families to gain skills training and education. The family associations are named “Refugees Association for Better Life Club” and “Great Lakes Women Refugees in Zambia.” 2. Educational Materials Project, Lusaka, Zambia, 2009, Dispersed educational materials to 2053 children from families of missing persons in support of MDG 2: Universal Education. 3. Capacity Building Training Program, Lusaka, Zambia, 2009: This program taught women of family associations to be leaders. 4. HIV/AIDS Counseling Project, Zambia, 2009: Conducted HIV/AIDS awareness counseling to 102 families, in support of MDG 6: Combat HIV/AIDS. 5. Early Marriage Awareness Counseling Project, Zambia, 2009: Conducted family planning counseling in support of MDG 3 and MDG 5: Maternal Health. |
