To promote inter-change and cooperation among African universities; to collect, classify and disseminate information on higher education; to promote cooperation among institutions in curriculum development; to encourage increased contacts between its members and the international academic world; to encourage the development and wider use of African languages. |

In the area of research, the AAU has a staff exchange programme, which allows for the exchange of staff in member universities as well as for examination purposes. |
