  • Non-governmental organization

Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: Yonge Nawe is a non-governmental organization dedicated to spreading environmental awareness throughout the kingdom of Swaziland. It seeks to bring about change in behavior sufficient to ensure a sustainable use of our natural resources through providing knowledge and encouraging active participation.
Illustrative Project: We were part of a group that lobbied and pushed the Government to establish a Swaziland environment authority, which was set up in 1992. We now sit on its board and this body has the ultimate authority on all environmental issues. Through its establishment we are now able to carry out environmental assessments on all proposed projects. We are also hoping that through it we shall see environmental education becoming part of the formal school curriculum, as at the present moment our organization has to conduct all environmental awareness raising, education and training in a non-formal way.
