View Additional Information

Social Development

Accreditation to: Indigenous Forum
Affiliation with other organizations: My organization representas Women among the fisherfolk communities along lake victoria and the fisherfolk communities at large. Lake Victoria is the only source of their livelihood and majority spend all their life time along the lake involved in the fishing activities as the main activity and source of livelihood. Women live their homes as early as six in the morning and come back at noon day ready to sell their fish at the nearby markets. Men spend their nights in the lake doing their catch. With lake victoria's continue to loose it's water rapidly due to environmental effects fishing industry is adversely affected resulting in negative impact on the fisherfolk communities- the people therefore live in absolute poverty. Lack of knowledge, lack of information and high illiteracy level especially among women results to poor health and high spread of HIV/AIDS among fisherfolk communities, many areas are inaccessible due to remote conditions and lack of infrastracture therefore poeple live in strong cultural beliefs, living in poor conditions without proper sanitation and health care, Women form 69% of the population in the fisherfolk communities butlive under strong male domination, without a voice and lack of human rights to the point of exchanging sex for fish.
