Purpose: | Women Advancement Trust (WAT) promotes the advancement of women through education, skills training, research, entrepreneurship and information dissemination. Its key objectives are to create awareness of women's rights, to promote education on human settlements and environmental issues, to promote skills training for women, to advocate for gender sensitive policies, and to enhance self-reliance initiatives among women. |
Illustrative Project: | WAT has carried out an educational campaign and lobbying programme on women's rights to access land and housing. It successfully lobbied for the inclusion of a clause barring the use of traditional laws and customs if they acted against the constitution and human rights within the national land policy. WAT led the 1997 women's day celebrations which focused on women's access to land ownership. Since then, WAT had organized four awareness-raising workshops and continues to work with the gender task force - a collective of NGO members that focuses on lobbying with regards to the land. The campaign will move to rural areas this year. |
