Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To promote and improve the status of African media women in Zimbabwe to address the gaps in the information and planning needs of both professional media women and rural women involved in development activities to monitor and correct the portrayal of women in the media and to provide training for young professionals, youth and rural women on how to utilize the media for development and self empowerment.
Illustrative Project: The Development Through Radio project (DTR) is a rural radio listening club initiated by FAMZ in 1988 and has 55 clubs. It provides rural dwellers access to national radio through active participants in the preparation of development oriented programmes on their own needs, concerns and priorities. The main aim is to recognize that any meaningful solution to community problems must begin with the community members themselves who should identify, prioritize and articulate their needs, as media practitioners and donor agencies might perceive the same problems differently. The DTR programmes are part of the broadcast schedule of Radio 4, the national education and development channel of ZBC.
