Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To challenge structures and stereotypes that oppress and divide women through our magazine "Sister Namibia," information dissemination through the resource center, and by running a gender education programme in schools. We are also involved in advocacy of issues important to women.
Illustrative Project: We actively participated in the multimedia campaign on violence against women. We organized self-defense workshops and protest marches against violence. The result was a new rape bill which imposes stiff sentences on offenders. We coordinated the pro-choice alliance which aims to reform the law on abortion to make it available on demand within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. A draft bill was proposed and is awaiting approval from the Cabinet.
