Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: Ceasefire mainstreams gender in all its work. Our activities include workshops, conferences, media dissemination, legislation review and response, networking with like-minded organisations. Some of our achievements include. • Running women, gender and militarization programs over five years, including community workshops and the commemoration of International Women’s Day and National Women’s Day • Networking with other CSOs, faith-based organisations and sections of the South African government on the issue of arms and gender • Monitoring of media reports on incidents of violence against women (Table attached) • Submission to parliament on the implementation of the Domestic Violence Act • Attendance of Gender and Militarism conference convened by War Resisters International. • Attendance of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom’s International Women’s Day Disarmament Seminar in Geneva: At what cost? Women, wars, weapons and Conflict Prevention. • Attendance at first women’s only work on women, small arms and the arms trade treaty in Addis Ababa; facilitated the local workshop on the same. • Participation in “Gender Reconciliation” workshops • Facilitation of “Alternatives to Violence” workshops • Promotion, support and monitoring of UN Resolution 1325 (and follow—up resolutions) which urges all UN member states to: 1. Adopt a gender perspective when negotiating and implementing peace, 2. Respect in full the international law applicable to the rights and protection of women and girls, especially as civilians 3. Increase the number of women at all decision-making levels in conflict prevention, management and resolution; 4. Increase support for women’s peace building activities; 5. Support equal participation for women in peace negotiations at all levels; 6. Address the specific protection needs of women in conflict situations; 7. Prosecute war crimes against women. More generally we also have the following as achievements: • Ongoing education and awareness raising on issues of disarmament and military spending, and their negative impact on human development. Most recently we conducted a peace course for young people. This covered important human rights, gender and peace topics and participants were given regular homework which they had to complete. They were also given media training. • Publication of our newsletter Anti War News on a regular basis and other important literature and papers. • Attendance, lobbying and involvement at the UN Review Conference on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms & Light Weapons. • South African Campaign to ban landmines was initially coordinated by the Ceasefire Campaign with a network of more than 130 organizations. The campaign was a contributing factor in the South African government’s decision to ban all production, use and stockpiling of anti – personnel landmines in 1997. • The Ceasefire Campaign then became a steering committee member of the International Campaign to ban landmines and a part of the group that was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize award in 1997. • Our campaign against military spending led to the formation of South African Coalition Against Military Spending. • Supporting the international movement to establish an internationally accepted and legally binding arms trade treaty. • Supporting the international movement to have cluster munitions banned including attending all the Cluster Munition Coalition meetings and meetings of states for the past 4 years; the successful lobbying the South African government. • Regular submissions to the South African Parliament on legislation on arms control and mercenaries. • Research on military spending and the arms trade. • Research on peace missions, particularly South Africa’s involvement and the gender perspective. • Monitoring of South Africa’s National conventional arms Control Control Committee
