Sustainable Development

Major group affiliation:
  • Scientific and technological communities
Affiliation with other organizations: The Earth System Governance Project is a core project of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP), which is sponsored by the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the International Council for Science (ICSU), and the United Nations University (UNU). The Earth System Governance Project strongly believes that the Project will succeed only if it can rely on a broad network that reflects the interdisciplinary, international and multi-scale challenge that lies ahead. A core element of this is the strong network of collaborating institutions, the ‘Global Alliance of Earth System Governance Research Centres’. These Centres support the implementation of specific parts of the Earth System Governance Science Plan, for example by sharing responsibility for the analysis of one particular analytical problem or one particular flagship activity. In addition, they act as focal points for earth system governance research in their area. Currently, the global alliance of research centres brings together the VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands; the Australian National University, Australia; Chiang Mai University, Thailand; Colorado State University, USA; Lund University, Sweden; University of East Anglia, United Kingdom; Oldenburg University, Germany; the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Sweden; and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Strong networks on earth system governance research are also emerging in China, and discussions with potential partners in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, India, and Latin America are underway. In addition we cooperate with a multitude of academic and non-academic institutions all over the world. For further information, please see our website http://earthsystemgovernance.org/events
Publications: The "Earth System Governance: People, Places and the Planet. Science and Implementation Plan of the Earth System Governance Project" was published in 2009. The approval from the IHDP Scientific Committee of the "Science and Implementation Plan" marked the official launch of the Earth System Governance Project as a new core project of IHDP. The Science Plan elaborates upon the concept of earth system governance and on the central questions, methods and processes of a global research effort in this field.
