Purpose of the organization: from its inception in 2005, T.E.R., a CBO authorised and registered by the Ministries of Education and Social Services respectively, has engaged in environmental awareness activities including; Training seminars and workshops on environmental issues. Clean-up exercises. Tree nursery development & seedling planting in school compounds and neighbourhoods. Annual creative expression competitions for the environment in Art, Music and Dance, Drama and Poetry. T.E.R. works with schools, institutions of higher learning and community groups but with particular bias towards schools. The major highlight of our annual events has always been W.E.D. (World Environment Day) celebrations during which students and groups are awarded for their afforestation effort and performance in the creative expression competitions. This time round we want to put much more emphasis on the afforestation initiative through a vigorous campaign to establish tree nurseries in every school. Through this initiative we foresee every school having in excess of 2,000 seedlings ready for planting (or sale) by the close of 2010. During the period of T.E.R.’s existence, more than 15,000 trees have been planted in school woodlots, neighbourhoods and at the Children’s Forest situated at the Prisons Staff Training College, Ruiru. In the course of this year alone, T.E.R. plans to mobilise schools and other stakeholders to plant more than 50,000 trees. The aim of this proposal is to invite support either in full or part, in cash or in kind, for the constituency-wide capacity building workshops, tree nursery development, purchase of tree seedlings and subsequent planting and related expenses.
Activities relevant to the conference of States Parties to the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: 1.Tree planting in Childrens’ Forest, at P.S.T.C 2.Monitoring and evaluation of tree survival rate for 100 seedlings given out per school to T.E.R Schools by OISCA (Term I, 2010) 3.Plan and organise Headteachers and Teachers workshops for the O.C.O.T.A.C. Initiative during Term II & III for the constituency 4.Sourcing and subsequent transportation of seedlings from the point of purchase to the schools 5.Planning and organising the Kieni Forest tree planting 6.Awarding prizes to best schools in afforestation effort and Mr & Miss Environment from all participating Schools and institutions.
