Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To provide a sustainable and profitable financial services to the economically disadvantaged groups through vibrant mobilisation and collection: empowering them with knowledge and confidence to fully participate in Zimbabwe's economic development while facilitating their capacity to exploit investment opportunities - ultimately their standards of living.
Illustrative Project: The Savings and Credit Opportunities for Rural Enterprises (SCORE), is a five-year (October 1998 - September 2003) USAID-funded project. The project life cycle came to an end on September 20, 2003. The project is operating in five branches i.e. Marondera, Rusape, Harare, Gokwe and Bulawayo, and has an active clientele base of 4,841 valued at Z$498,084,369 with portfolio at risk of 7.79%. 85% of the project client are female. 20% of operations is peri urban with the rest rural based.In all these areas there are clients whose livelihood standards have improved greatly. One woman in Marondera expanded from having one sewing machine to opening a big shop where she has employed two ladies to make garments for sale. Another man in Rusape had his business grow from selling sweets and other small items to opening a shop at a local shopping centre.
