Office of the Special Adviser on Africa |
Purpose: |
CODESRIA encourages research by establishment of 'multinational working groups', which co-ordinates the research activities of 20 to 30 scholars, in a variety of disciplines, whose studies investigate common themes. Findings are published in CODESRIA's Working Paper series. A similar program of 'national working groups' has been launched to encourage research at the national level. The organisation also organises conferences where social scientists and policy-makers meet to discuss important current issues of concern to all African countries, including democracy and human rights; democratisation; conflict resolution in the Great Lake Region; academic freedom, research and social responsibility; and a variety of other economic, social and development themes. |
Illustrative Project: |
CODESRIA's activities are varied but interconnected with the basic objective of developing the social sciences in Africa. These include: comparative interdisciplinary research both at the continental and national level; publication of research findings of both CODESRIA-sponsored research projects as well as the findings of African researchers sponsored by other institutions; supporting training of African social scientists; documentation and retrieval of information on research for individual researchers and institutions; making researchers and policy-makers aware of major current critical issues which are of concern to and impact on Africa; collaboration with and support of other African non-governmental social science organisations (sub-regional and/or continent-wide professional organisations). CODESRIA's international activities are carried out within the framework of: The Inter-regional Coordinating Committee of Development Association (ICCDA); the United Nations system; and direct bilateral relations with individual institutes in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean.
