SLADEA's Mediatory Skills Project (2003) was a one-year pilot project aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence among war victims, ex-combatants and returnees through training facilitators in conflict resolution skills (communication, nonviolent communication and mediation). These trained persons in turn disseminated their knowledge and effected change of behaviour through the use of acquired skills in their daily lives and by conducting training in their communities and organisations. Trainers of mediatory skills also learnt how to organise, carry out, report on project activities and account for funds. A resource book "SLADEA's Handbook for Mediation" with systematically structured information is published for use by the over 500 beneficiaries and trainers. The overwhelming success of this pilot phase has made the project an integral part of a nationwide literacy programme. SLADEA's nationwide adult literacy programme (2004-2006) is currently implemented. It aims to contribute to human resource development by increasing the low percentage of active literate manpower and to provide a structured environment and access to non-formal education programmes to improve the living condition of learners, their families and communities. Beneath other results, by the end of the programme four Continuing Education Centers will be in operation, appropriate teaching and learning material will be developed and at least 1750 learners will have acquired knowledge and skills to develop, sustain and improve their lives. |
