Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To empower women and young girls from disadvantaged communities in both rural and urban areas through training in life and other skills that will enable them to take up challenges. It is also to prepare them to take up positions in government structures to influence policies on gender sensitive issues and to promote support for the recognition and development of women.
Illustrative Project: WLTP has established 12 women centers in 6 out of the 12 provinces of South Africa. These centers are run by young women trained by WLTP. The young women have started development programs in their areas such as creches, literacy classes, and gardening projects. Many of them participated in the 1994 voter education campaign, and some were officers at polling stations. Others participate in their community structures and serve on various committees. They are used by other organizations as resource persons to facilitate workshops on topics such as the abuse of children and women, HIV/AIDS awareness, and leadership.
