Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: ACCORD provides training in the skills of negotiation, conflict anticipation, resolution and management. It also establishes forums to foster the development and application of the above skills and provides conflict resolution services in the form of facilitation, mediation and other consensus building techniques. ACCORD also hosts seminars to raise public awareness of conflict resolution as a process.
Illustrative Project: ACCORD has issued a number of publications: including An Agenda for Peace in Southern Africa; Substantially Free and Fair Elections?; State, Sovereignty and Responsibility; Africa Peace Award Brochure; African Conference on Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution; Youth Skills Empowerment Project Report; Conflict Resolution Wisdom from Africa; Peacekeeping in Africa: (a) Report on the Pretoria Seminar; (b) Training Report Lusaka; Preventive Diplomacy Series: (a) Preventive Diplomacy: The Case of Sudan; (b) The General Principles of Multi-Track Diplomacy; United Nations Peacekeeping in Africa: Lessons for the OAU and SADC; Mechanisms for Conflict Management in West Africa: Politics of Harmonization. Participated in the mid-term review of the United Nations New Agenda for the Development of Africa in the 1990s (UN-NADAF) during the 51st session of the United Nations.The organization presents the biennial Africa Peace Award recognising individuals, communities or nations actively promoting respect for human rights, peaceful settlement of disputes and good governance of public affairs. It also brings out a newsletter in this regard called 'Conflict Trends' which is regarded as a leading publication in the field of African conflicts.
