Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To promote human and community development for the relief of socio-economic, cultural, and religious injustices. Focus has been on women and children in deprived zones of Ghana.
Illustrative Project: The project identifies a target population of women and girls whose rights have been infringed upon as a result of a cultural practice that confines victims to fetish shrines for years, and in some cases, for life. The project has managed to abolish the practise and a Bill has been passed as a result of advocacy. Shrine owners have also been negotiated with for the release of victims. 460 slave women and girls have been actually released out of an estimated 4,500. Counselling and rehabilitation services have been provided for the 460 women and girls, as well as their integration into civil society.
