Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: The Society has undertaken the Important Bird Areas Project from April 1995 - December 1996. The objectives of the project were to (1) identify sites important for biodiversity conservation; (2) review existing information and conduct surveys to collect data; (3) organize and present the data to the public and interested parties through the publication of the Important Bird Area (IBA) Directory.
Illustrative Project: The first phase of the project culminated in December 1996 by publishing a book "Important Bird Areas in Ethiopia: A First Inventory" - the first to be published in Africa. The Society has taken the IBA process further through a collaborative working relationship with the Norwegian Ornithological Society. This work focuses on a study of particular species of birds, water birds and on the perception of local communities regarding biodiversity conservation, particularly birds.
