Office of the Special Adviser on Africa
Purpose: To sensitize and educate the public on environmental issues; to promote conservation by influencing public policy through grassroots activism, public education, lobbying and litigation; to organize community activities such as tree planting and soil conservation; to establish social programmes in order to alleviate poverty in rural communities
Illustrative Project: Microfinance/tree planting project to beautify schools: This scheme was initiated by the Environmental Vanguard to assist the unemployed youth with income-generating activities. The scheme consists of seven programmes such as raising rabbits, bee-keeping, poultry, mushroom farming, snail farming, piggery animal husbandry. Instead of giving out money (cash), we construct the structure and give out the animals, snails or mushrooms after going through 2 months of orientation programme. We also monitor and evaluate the progress of this scheme.
