The Green Belt Movement

Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: The Green Belt Movement (GBM) is a community-based, development and environmental organization focused on community mobilization and empowerment. It's mission is to create a value-driven society of grassroots people who consciously work for continued improvement of their livelihood, self determination, equity and a greener cleaner environment.
Illustrative Project: In the course of the past 30 years, GBM has evolved an approach to mobilizing grassroots action through which it has support women's groups to produce and plant over 30 million trees. This has transformed the landscape and lives of families and communities, especially women. The heightened environmental consciousness through GBM-sponsored seminars empowers communities for advocacy and networking work to protect green spaces such as parks and forests. Through the Food Security Project, communities receive knowledge and skills on the nutritional value of local indigenous food and fruits (and therefore local biological diversity), which are suited to the local climate and soil.
