Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: KYCEP exists to promote and support education and development opportunities for youth, and to improve their socio-economic, political and health status. This mission is to be achieved by developing and promoting the adoption of appropriate measures for improving the holistic development of the youth, women and communities.
Illustrative Project: World Bank (Small Grants Programme) supported KYCEP with a grant amounting to $6340 for setting up of Community Computer Centres in Nyahururu town. The target groups for this project have been women and youth. Other focus areas include primary and secondary schools, youth and women groups, business community, religious groups, minority groups such as disabled and other community based organizations. The project goal is to harness the power of information technology to strengthen youth community-based activities in order to provide their membership with services beneficial to business growth. It aimed at increasing women and youth awareness on available economic opportunities and civic rights and responsibilities. Exposure to an advancement in information communication technology will lead to an improved capacity of the youth and women to make informed decisions relating to development and their daily needs. There will be an increase in opportunities for community-based organizations to upgrade their traditional information systems and networks. The ICT project provided a solid base for civic education project, which was implemented by KYCEP. The project has provided a forum for rural folk especially youth to learn more about democracy, constitutional and governance issues. It has also provided an information avenue for youth on HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and sexuality, self-reliance and other pertinent issues in the lives of young people. It provides a forum for youth and women to share best practices with others like them in the rest of the world. The project was borne out of a community resource centre expanded to institutions such as schools, churches and women's groups. The initial training equipped the trainees with skills to impart to the rest of the community. The project collaborates with promotional website such as: www.sokoonline.com to market local products both locally and internationally. The project was also supported by Computer Aid - UK and Missionary Computer Fellowship, USA.
