Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: The Malawi Institute of Democratic and Economic Affairs (MIDEA) was originally established for democratic education, training and economic research. When Malawi experienced conflict at both the leadership and grassroots level, MIDEA was called in to intervene. Since then the Institute's programme has also included conflict prevention and resolution. The Department of Conflict Resolution and Training develops and administers conflict resolution programmes, facilitates mediation processes, conducts early-warning monitoring and co-ordinates fact-finding missions. Training is also an important additional activity. The Institute is also involved in mediation efforts in Zambia's political conflict.
Illustrative Project: MIDEA facilitated mediation between Government and opposition for 9 months. The opposition parties (Malawi Congress Party and Alliance for Democracy) boycotted parliament for 9 months on grounds of constitutional application and policy position. MIDEA facilitated the mediation until the opposition parties went back to parliament.
