Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To conduct strategic and applied research in partnership with national agricultural research systems for more sustainable and productive land use. ICRAF aims to improve human welfare by alleviating poverty, increasing cash income, improving food and nutritional security and enhancing environmental resilience in the tropics.
Illustrative Project: In Eastern Zambia, the Zambian/ICRAF Agroforestry project has introduced a novel technology that uses indigenous tree and shrub species planted as a fallow crop to increase soil fertility rapidly, and to improve land productivity. The technique is known as "improved fallows" and more than 4000 farmers in the region are now working with ICRAF and Zambian agricultural officials to evaluate the technology and widen its adoption.
