Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: We intend to promote a democratic society in which women participate freely and equally in politics and public affairs through the electoral system as voters and leaders in Kenya. Our mission is to promote the participation of women in leadership and decision-making in order to bring about positive social change.
Illustrative Project: The league implemented "Monitoring women's participation in the electoral process in Kenya with particular focus on the issue of electoral violence" project between 2002 and 2004. The aim was to monitor cases of pre-election and post-election violence as an impediment ot women's participation in political leadership in Kenya. It also monitored images of women leaders in the run up to the 2002 general elections. Out of this study evidence of electoral violence and electoral irregularities were documented, quantity and quality of women by mainstream media was also documented. These have become important tools for lobbying and advocacy in relation to electoral issues.
