Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust Zimbabwe

Advancement of Women

Affiliation with other organizations: WLSA Zimbabwe is affiliated to the Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe. This is an umbrella organization that deals with women's rights in a broader perspective ranging fom legal to socio -economic to health to violence against women to political participation. WLSA Zimbabwe has been an active member and is in the legal and constitutional cluster that was key in the recent constitutional reform process. With the National Association of NGOs, WLSA Zimbabwe is a member under the gender and women's cluster. With the AIDS and Rights Alliance of Southern Africa, WLSA Zimbabwe is the only women's rights organization from Zimbabwe which is a member and advances the rights of women infected with HIV. With the Gender Forum, WLSA Zimbabwe sits as a member and the Forum discusses and conducts advocacy on gender issues and also commemoration of international days such as international Women's Day and 16 days of activism. Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights is an umbrella body for human rights lawyers and represents women and men in court. It also has a gedner desk. WLSA Zimbabwe supports the activities of ZLHR as they relate to the rights of women. Women Inheritance Now is an umbrella body off 14 organizations in East and Southern Africa that is concerned with the property and inheritance rights of women especially as this relates to HIV/AIDS. WLSA Zimbabwe replicated WIN at national level by setting up the Property and Inheritance Rights Network of Zimbabwe. This network conducts advocacy on law and policy reform and also engages in strategic litigation.
