Purpose of the organization: Global Utmaning (Global Challenge) is an independent and entrepreneurial think tank that promotes long-term solutions to crises and challenges in the ecological, economic and social systems through collaboration between research, business, politics and civil society. Global Utmaning is a node within international networks, working with strategic analysis, policy solutions, and advocacy through policy dialogues, seminars, and reports. Global Utmaning has a qualified and experienced network of over 90 senior advisors with cross-sectoral expertise and a strong belief in the future. Our main activities include organising policy dialogues, public seminars, conferences, and publications. Based on a holistic approach that all global challenges in our time are intertwined, we highlight the challenges and synergies within the global economy, energy and climate, water, global health, urbanisation, digitalisation, demography, migration and integration and promote long-term solutions for sustainable development. We are convinced that the key to success is global sustainable development. Our main goal is to promote sustainable development locally, in Sweden, the Nordic countries, in the EU as well as globally. Stakeholders often discuss various global issues separately, therefore we find ourselves in a unique position in creating platforms for researchers, businesses, policymakers and civil society to deepen the discussion on issues explored, as a means to formulate recommendations and solutions in contributing to achieving the 2030 Agenda.
Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: The daily activities currently include administrating six thematic programs: Economy - Our goal is to contribute to renewing the public debate about the economy, labour markets and structural change in Sweden, Scandinavia and Europe. Too many stakeholders discuss various economic issues separately. We provide a systems perspective and cross-border work platforms, while we drill deeper into the issues explored. We problematize issues; providing expertise, process and bridged competence. Energy and Climate - The Nordic countries have been at the forefront when it comes to the development of low carbon energy. The region has also succeeded in creating new industries and jobs in the process, such as wind turbines in Denmark, the solar systems in Norway and new transmission solutions in Sweden. In Energy and Climate, we highlight strategic issues and stimulate new thinking to create political will and drive for a faster alternative energy sources and a broad structural transformation towards sustainability. Health & Education -Development cooperation is changing. It faces challenges that require new thinking and improved strategies. When the world shifts focus from MDGs to SDGs, it requires a holistic approach involving all parts of society. Global health is one of our prioritised areas as it is a key for all human and societal development. In the programme, we run a three-year project called Re-Inventing Development Policy in the Global Era funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which aims to create new innovative ideas and policy proposals for Swedish development cooperation. Sustainable Cities - The next thirty years we will build more cities than ever built in human history. And at the same time rebuild cities that have been built in an unsustainable way. Just over half of the world’s population lives in cities. In the last five thousand years, humans have developed cities to accommodate three billion inhabitants. In 2040, the UN estimates that six billion of the world population will be living in cities, in other words a doubling in twenty-five years. Collective efforts in science, politics, civil society and in the private sector is vital to promote development of sustainable urban development, a collaborative work that Global Utmaning conducted under the program sustainable cities since 2010. The program aims to influence sustainable urban development policies and governance, both locally and globally. Nordic Ways - The Nordic countries have one the world's most comprehensive macro-regional cooperation, a collaboration that has produced growth, welfare and capacity to manage crises. The climate threat, changing global economic conditions and a technology-driven development means that the conditions for a sustainable future daily negotiated locally and globally. The Nordic society was founded on the tradition of seeking long-term solutions through consensus and shared responsibility between policy-makers, businesses and civil society, and has aroused international interest. An interest that also raises the urgent need to also look at how this historically successful collaboration can conquer their future shape and relevance. Race for the Baltic - The Baltic Sea is one of the world's most endangered marine areas where eutrophication has led to the killing fields of one-sixth of the seabed. Biodiversity is declining rapidly, and new research shows an increase of harmful substances and microscopic plastic particles in the Baltic Sea. There are over 80 million people inhabitants around the Baltic Sea, divided in 1500 communities in 14 countries. In order to improve the Baltic Sea environment is the collective actions of politicians, industry and civil society is crucial. Race for the Baltic is a platform for these actors, with the aim of creating political will, collective action and encourage innovation.
