Sustainable Development

Major group affiliation:
  • Children and youth
  • Non-governmental organization
Involvement in UN Partnerships: Yes
If yes, explain in detail: We works close with UN-HABITAT Social Inclusion and Human Rights Division (previously Youth and Livelihood Unit). For example, with the supported from UN-Habitat, we built our Children's corner close to youth centre. Most recently, we built 10 handwashing sites in combat for COVID-19. And we work together with UN-Habitat to make educational videos on infection control both in English and Swahili.
Affiliation with other organizations: Norwegian Embassy and Canadian High Commission supported us on building handwashing sites.Besides, we run the waste management projects in a joint operation with OXFAM, Ford Foundation and Environmental Youth Alliance. We established an ICT space with the partnership of UN-Habitat, Samsung and Up With Hope. We worked with Spatial Collective to engage youth in the community to create the first comprehensive map of Mathare using open street technology and mapped all of the resources in the community including schools, churches, clinics, water points, black spots, etc.
Publications: 1., first published in Nairobi in 2015 by UN-Habitat. 2.,first published in Nairobi in 2015 by UN-Habitat.

Social Development

Affiliation with other organizations: The Uji Moto Feeding Program which was developed in partnership with an agency called Joy Devine who used the MECYG space to feed street families daily and return run away youth to their families in rural areas. The National Youth Service arrived in Mathare and the chairman was elected by the community as Chairman of the savings programme (called a SACCO) which helped secure the employment close to 500 community members, the majority of which were women and who are still seeing the benefit of the SACCO. Another project called Give Directly which has selected over 1000 youth under the age of 30 in Mathare who will be given money every month with no strings attached and will be monitored to see how their livelihoods improve.
Purpose of the organization: The origin of the group was in that way a wish to address two of the main grievances in the community: 1) the uncontrollable amounts of garbage, and 2) the high youth unemployment. Their response was targeted. They started a waste management system, which would employ young people by paying them for removing garbage from the community. The purpose of this organization is to empower youth from informal settlement and alleviate poverty in line with sustainable development goals (SDG’s).
Description of the membership of the organization, indicating the total number of members: The group started out with 15 members, and today there are 45 active members now, 22 are female and 23 are male.
