Mission statement:
The university has a diverse student body. Many of the students come from indigenous cultures. We offer scholarships for tuition and a work/study program that enable them to complete an undergraduate degree. We have Yamagata Funding that provides assistance to indigenous and island students fund internships and practicums. We have Cultural Clubs that is a vital part of the university program that allows indigenous people to preserve their cultures and provide a support group. Every Winter semester, we hold a Culture Night which showcase all the arts and performances of indigenous clubs and other cultural clubs. We also have a Center for International Peace Building, which caters to conflicts in the Middle East but also in the Pacific because of the high percentage of island and indigenous students in our institution. This trains them in conflict resolution and mediation in their communities. We have an Oceanography organization that helps preserve indigenous languages. Last, we have a Human Rights Organization, which pushes for indigenous rights in partnership with the Hawaii Institute of Human Rights. The focus of the Human Rights this semester has been on Global Warming and Climate Change where we organized activities such as a Film Series on climate issues and sea level rise in islands such as Tuvalu and Marshall Islands; Beach Clean-Up; and guest speakers in sustainable development with the local community. We were also fortunate to host Dr. Carslyle Corbin (Executive Secretary of the Council of Presidents UN General Assembly) last week where we discussed issues of decolonization and self-determination of island territories.
