| Purpose of the organization: |
The Human Development Organization was formed by a group of University students and plantation / development workers in 1992. M The plantation community in Sri Lanka is a very underprivileged, oppressed and exploited community. The plantation economic system perpetuates the dependence of the poor workers on the plantations. Women’s status in the plantation sector produces a continuous lag in opportunities for them in education, health, politics, employment, and development; while their worth as individuals and as partners of family and community is bare recognized. Taking in to account all these situations, the HDO believes that social change through the poverty elimination and educating and empowering the people is the way towards their sustainable development. |

2001 : The HDO participated in Inter-Governmental Meeting on UN WCAR. in Iran. March 2001 : The HDO Accredited by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for the WCAR. May 2001 HDO participated in 2nd Prepcom Meeting of WCAR of UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva. July 2001 the HDO contributed to prepare Alternative Country Report to submit to ICERD in Geneva. August / Sept. 2001 : HDO delegation participated in World Conference Against Racism 2001, Durban, South Africa. May 2003: HDO participated in UN Working Group on Minorities in Geneva. Dec.2009: HDO participated in Forum on Minorities in Geneva. |

There are around 100 General members who include founder members. The General members have voting powers. There are around 2500 Partner members who will participate in General meetings and advise the committee and general body, The partner members are field level decision making body of the organization. |
