Mission statement:	The Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) is a non-governmental, non-sectarian, non-political and non-profit making organization. It provides a forum where women doctors and dentists discuss common concerns and deliberate on health issues especially of women and children. MWAN has been involved in promoting the health of women and children in the Nigeria by organising outreach to women in the prisons, market places and children in the motherless babies’ homes; health awareness campaign and public health education and screening for diabetes, hypertension cervical and breast cancer of women in the various local government areas as well as sensitization workshops on reproductive health. Some specific activities include .Training of health workers in the country on visual inspection the cervix for early diagnosis of cancer of the cervix. .Setting up of cancer screening centres and well women centres .Setting up of adolescent counselling centres following the conference theme on ‘Adolescent Reproductive Health’ in 1997. •Activities to reduce maternal mortality through safe motherhood and reproductive health issues by setting up Family Planning projects, community outreach campaigns, lectures and workshops for women groups, post abortion care services where women are educated on measures to adopt to avoid unwanted pregnancies, have safe deliveries, and assert their reproductive health rights. •Involvement in different aspects of cancer research and prevention. White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood has been re-established at the national level with Medical Women heading the Core Committee. It is currently hosted by CEDPA in Abuja and the First lady Hajia Turai YarÁdua who is the Patron.

Organizational structure:	MWAN is the largest organization comprising women in the medical professions in Nigeria with branches in 29 states of the federation. The parent body is the Medical Women's International Association MWIA, which has consultative status with the Economic Emergency Fund and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation. Liaison is maintained with the Planned Parenthood Federation, the International Federation of University Women and the International Council of Women, amongst others.
