Office of the Special Adviser on Africa

Purpose: To promote the rights of women and children, freedom from all forms of violence and the right to development through social advocacy, mediation and interventions aimed at improving the conditions in which they live. By so doing, to act as a catalyst for bringing about true peace, equity and reduction of human suffering in a more just and humane civil society.
Illustrative Project: WOPED carried a "Know Your Rights" information campaign on violence against women for women in rural communities of eastern Nigeria, under our Anti-Violence Education Program. The project enabled local women to form their own self-help groups to facilitate small scale projects. To encourage the effort of women and their meeting time, WOPED is in the process of opening up an information/social centre in these communities for purposes of monitoring and providing continued advocacy.
