Major group affiliation:
  • Scientific and technological communities
Involvement in UN Partnerships: Yes
If yes, explain in detail: Since 2008 the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ is having the scientific coordination of the global initiative TEEB - The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity, which is hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). TEEB is part of UNEP's Green Economy Initiative (GEI). As Green Economy is at the center of Rio+20, this partnership between UNEP and UFZ includes joint activities at the Rio+20 conference and in various ongoing international processes. The TEEB Reports (http://www.teebweb.org/) have been published in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and provided input to the formulation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Currently UFZ is involved in the implementation phase of TEEB, cooperating with UNEP, CBD, the European Commission and other partners including NGOs and governmental organizations at the international and national level on several continents (mainly in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and Europe).
Affiliation with other organizations: UFZ is part of various international networks mainly in science and within Europe. For example related to the topic of Green Economy UFZ is part of the International Society for Ecological Economics (ISEE) and the Ecosystem Service Partnership (ESP).
Publications: As UFZ is a research organization scientific publications in scientific journals is a major part of UFZ's strategy for communicating research findings. Each year UFZ staff is publishing more than 500 articles in scientific peer-reviewed journals. Reports for decision makers in policy and practice are a further means of translating the scientific findings into practice. The TEEB Reports are a prominent example which had a great impact on national and international strategies for assessing the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services for sustainable development and the development of a Green Economy. Besides the inclusion of TEEB recommendations in the CBD Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, countries such as India , Brazil, and Germany started their own national assessments inspired by the TEEB initiative. TEEB Reports: http://www.teebweb.org/InformationMaterial/TEEBReports/tabid/1278/Default.aspx In total UFZ publishes 800-900 publications (papers, books, reports, etc.) each year. TEEB Reports: TEEB for National Policy Makers (2009) TEEB for Local and Regional Policy Makers (2010) The TEEB Economic and Ecological Foundations (2010) TEEB for Business (2010) The TEEB Climate Issues update (2009) TEEB interim Report (2008)
