Purpose of the organization: African Women’s Active Nonviolence Initiatives for Social Change (AWANICh) draws inspiration from Bhandari’s, assertion that “Human beings have an inherent biological capacity to be violent yet, not all humans use violence; they are selective in their use of it. Anthropologists studying tribal societies have found that there have been as many human societies with little or no violence as there are societies with violence. Therefore, even though violence is a human possibility it is not inevitable. The need for transformative approaches to achieving sustainable peace have therefore become necessary considering the spate of violence confronting us as a human society. Hence AWANICh purpose is to promote gender sensitive active nonviolence peacebuilding as a means of transforming unjust social-political structures in Africa for sustainable peace with women as key players. AWANICh mission is to build a movement of African women peace activists to promote gender sensitive active nonviolence for sustainable peace.
Activities relevant to the conference of States Parties to the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Since 2007 AWANICh has engaged in empowering African Women peace activists, to promote active nonviolence and gender sensitivity as a means of transforming unjust political, social and economic structures in Africa for sustainable peace. some of the programmes and activities include Gender-sensitive active nonviolence education and training (GANV) for peace building practitioners, youth, religious bodies and security sectors throughout Africa with a particular focus on women.
