Purpose of the organization: The ECLT Foundation is a global leader in preventing child labour in tobacco agriculture, and protecting and improving the lives of children in tobacco-growing areas. We strengthen communities, improve policies, and advance research so that tobacco-growing communities can benefit from agriculture while ensuring that their children are healthy, educated, and safe.

Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: ECLT Foundation is currently implementing 5 ongoing major projects at regional levels: 1 - Kyrgyzstan, Implementing Practices to Address Child Labour in Tobacco (IMPACT) January 2013 – December 2015 in the communities of the tobacco-growing areas of Nookat; Aravan; Alabuka; Kadamjay districts. IMPACT helps families address this with micro-credits, vocational training, awareness, and community action. 2 - Mozambique, Realizing Effective Actions for Children Together (REACT), January 2013 – December 2016, targeting 12 communities in the Macanga and Angonia districts. 3 - Tanzania, Promoting Sustainable Practices to Eradicate Child Labour in Tobacco (PROSPER) - July 2011 – December 2015, Urambo and Sikonge District, Tabora Region. PROSPER employs several awareness-raising strategies; including helping community volunteers identify every at-risk child in the area. 4 - Malawi, Child Labour Elimination Actions for Real Change (CLEAR), July 2011 – December 2015, being carried out in Ntchisi District, Mchinji District, Rumphi District and nationwide. In Malawi over 1.4 million children are economically active—and 95% of them work in the agriculture sector‎. Our projects are tackling child labour on multiple fronts—including renovating schools and providing counselling to children withdrawn from child labour to help keep them in school. 5 - Uganda, Realizing Livelihoods Improvement through Savings and Education (REALIZE), January 2013 – December 2016, implemented in the tobacco-growing areas in Hoima district. From 2002 to 2012 18 other comprehensive sustainable development projects i seven countries were funded, completed, and evaluated. At national level, one example of organizational activities is the implementation of the Malawi National Conference on Child Labour in Agriculture in 2012 and its follow up activities that include ongoing support to the ILO national office, the national hild labour unit within the Ministry of Labour, among other support, and the National Steering Committee on Child Labour. At the international level, ECLT carries out global advocacy, engagement, dissemination of good practices, international collaboration with partners such as the Global March on Child Labour, Defense of Children International, Stop Child Labour Campaign among others. Additionally, ECLT funds and disseminates research from its headquarters in Geneva.

Description of the membership of the organization, indicating the total number of members: ECLT Foundation brings together the tobacco growers (International Tobacco Growers’ Association) and the world major tobacco producing and manufacturing companies, which are represented on the Board of the Foundation. ECLT’s funding comes from the tobacco companies, many of which also sit on the steering committees of projects in country. The International Labour Organization and Save the Children Switzerland act as Board Advisors.
