UNDP-UNEP Poverty and Environment Initiative (PEI) in Bhutan: Since 2008, Bhutan is participating in the Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The PEI is a global UN programme that supports country-led efforts to mainstream poverty-environment linkages into national development planning. The setting up of this initiative created favourable conditions for the realization of Norlha’s project for sustainable agriculture in Bhutan. Soil Erosion Reduction Project: In Trashigang Province, located in the eastern half of Bhutan, about 85% households living in rural area rely on agricultural activities for their livelihood. Several households point out that they suffer from food shortage during many months per year. With 40% of its lands concentrated on steep slopes, Trashigang is the district the most affected by soil erosion: agricultural production is thus directly threatened. In this context, and in close collaboration with the Royal Society for Protection of Nature (RSPN), Norlha launched a three year project with the goal of improving the quality of soil and increase the yield of the food crops of 40 local farming households directly (130 indirectly). The project allowed local communities to learn the techniques to reduce soil erosion as well as implementation of projects aiming at reduction of soil erosion. In that purpose, actions were oriented on trainings, awareness programs and advisory services, as well as provisions of plant materials and equipment. |
