Affiliation with other organizations: ACGC works with Global Affairs Canada to align their international development policy to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. ACGC is a member of the Canadian Council for International Cooperation (CCIC). The CCIC is a coalition of the Canadian voluntary sector organizations working globally to achieve sustainable human development. CCIC holds Consultative Status to ECOSOC, but we believe we would better serve the needs and interests of our Alberta-based members with our own Consultative Status. ACGC continues to collaborate with the other Provincial and Regional Councils for International Cooperation across Canada through the Inter-Council Network (ICN). ACGC has also developed partnerships with many other stakeholders, including Aga Khan Foundation Canada, and EQWIP Hubs Program developed by Canada World Youth and Youth Challenge International, and the Alberta Learning Consortia. Additional projects like the selection of the J7 delegates for Global Affairs Canada have also increased ACGCs role in youth engagement in Canada. In the coming year we anticipate continuing our collaborative work for increased impacts. ACGC member organizations work closely with UNESCO on global citizenship education and have attend UNESCO GCED forums including the GCED Forum held in Ottawa in March 2017. Affiliated with UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network.

Social Development

Affiliation with other organizations: ACGC works with Global Affairs Canada to align their international development policy to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. ACGC is a member of the Canadian Council for International Cooperation (CCIC). ACGC participates in academic initiatives of the Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID). The Center for Global Citizenship Education and Research, the Center for Ethnomusicology, and the Global Education Department at the University of Alberta are active member institutions of ACGC. The Micah Center at The King’s University as well as MacEwan University International are members. ACGC member organizations work closely with UNESCO on global citizenship education and have attend UNESCO GCED forums including the GCED Forum held in Ottawa in March 2017.

Purpose of the organization: ACGC provides a platform for members to convene, share ideas, and connect is a core function of the coalition. ACGC staff strive to keep up to date with members work in order to facilitate links and information sharing that is needed to maintain a strong sector in Alberta. ACGC prioritizes building the capacity and skills of our member organizations to help them maintain their effectiveness in our rapidly changing sector. ACGC has been focusing its public engagement efforts on linking the public directly with the work of ACGC member organizations and helping build the capacity of member organization to reach new audiences, especially youth. The organization promotes the idea of Canadians as Global Citizens by holding events which inspire Canadians to be more engaged in working towards a more equitable and just world.

Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: ACGC’s acitivites can be confirmed both through its Annual Report (found on its website) as well as its quarterly reports to Global Affairs Canada.
A list of members of the governing body of the organization, and their countries of nationality: Board of Directors are all based in Canada and include: Anne Fanning, Bill Howe, Carrie Rowlandson, Danielle Gibbie, Elizabeth Roden, Fredda Cherlet, Jamie Charlebois, Nina Delling, Patti McIntosh, Peter Schalk, Rebecca Kresta, Thomas Coldwell & Wendy Fehr. Members of the board represent an Alberta-based organization, and are voted in by the larger membership.
Description of the membership of the organization, indicating the total number of members: ACGC has 53 member organizations and 19 individual members. ACGC members are organizations, groups or individuals based in Alberta who support projects overseas and/or promote an understanding of global citizenship through related work within the province. ACGC provides capacity building opportunities through training and workshops as well as collaboration opportunities to foster partnerships with international and regional partners. ACGC represents its members at the provincial and national level when discussing Alberta and Canada’s international development policy.

Advancement of Women

ACGC continues to collaborate with the other Provincial and Regional Councils for International Cooperation across Canada through the Inter-Council Network (ICN). ACGC has also developed partnerships with many other stakeholders, including Aga Khan Foundation Canada, and EQWIP Hubs Program developed by Canada World Youth and Youth Challenge International, and the Alberta Learning Consortia. In 2016, ACGC hosted the UN Global Goals Advocate, Dr. Alaa Murabit, to speak to youth and public audiences in Edmonton about Gender equality and the SDGs. ACGC is working with a coalition of Canadian partners, including Plan Canada, to promote an international youth forum on SDG 5 leading up to Canada’s hosting of the G7 countries in 2018. Additional projects like the selection of the J7 (Junior 7) delegates for Global Affairs Canada have also increased ACGCs role in youth engagement in Canada. In the coming year we anticipate continuing our collaborative work for increased impacts through working with partners to advance local youth participation leading up to the G7 conference in Canada in 2018, as well as the IPCC Cities and Climate Change Conference hosted by our own city, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, in March 2018. ACGC member organizations work closely with UNESCO on global citizenship education and have attend UNESCO GCED forums including the GCED Forum held in Ottawa in March 2017.
