Purpose of the organization: |
LIDE exists in order to build capacity and create sustainable resources of resiliency strengthening, informal education, and life skills for at-risk adolescent girls. LIDE’s work is primarily in rural or remote communities of Haiti, with some international assistance in capacity building around Education in Emergencies. LIDE believes in capacity building from within. This means giving opportunities for growth and service to those who best understand the needs of a country — that county’s citizens. Therefore, a primary purpose for the organization is to provide training and accompaniment in developing the capacity for communities to sustain programs, as well as opportunities for members of a community to use their talents in order to serve their youth. |
Activities relevant to the conference of States Parties to the convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: |
While girls with disabilities are included within our rural programs in Haiti, LIDE also provides a special program in Gonaives that offers individuated and adaptive programs to a group differently abled youth in the Gonaives area. These kids have adapted to disabilities that include cerebral palsy, hydrocephaly, muscular dystrophy, and other genetic conditions by utilizing the strengths within them — especially those found within their hearts. The program for these youth still follow the same thematic curriculum as our other programs, but activities are adapted to their abilities while building additional strengths and addressing needs relevant to each child’s disability and “ability. LIDE also helps care for the medical needs of our participants with disabilities (as well as other participants with critical care needs) through partnerships with hospitals in Haiti and visits from medical professionals. |
