Social Development

Affiliation with other organizations: Geriatric Care and Vulnerable Support Initiative is affiliated to national, regional, and international Organizations. Our Organization entered into an MOU with the Government of Imo State, through the Ministry of Gender and Vulnerable Groups Affairs. We belong to the Geriatric Association of Nigeria, the Gerontology Association of Nigeria, and the Coalition of Societies for the Rights of Older Persons in Nigeria. Regionally, we belong to the Stakeholders Group On Ageing (SGA) Africa, Africa Palliative Care Association, meanwhile, internationally we belong to the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older People.
Publications: Accessibility of Medications by Chronically Ill Older Persons: A Cross-Sectional Assessment of Universal Health Coverage Amongst the Elderly in Nigeria. Volume 4 Issue 2 February 2020. We have two research works that have not been published one is on geriatrics (Achieving Universal Health Coverage Crucial for Older Persons a Rural Approach) and one on Maternal and Child Health (Pregnant Women Birth Place Preference a Factor Influencing Maternal and Child Mortality In Rural Communities in Imo State South Eastern Nigeria).
Purpose of the organization: 1) Improving the social determinants of health of the underserved communities around the world. 2) Improving access to health and social services to vulnerable populations (Older Persons, homeless people, Refugees, and victims of Gender-Based Violence in underserved communities around the world, especially in humanitarian situations. 3) Conducting research on Universal Health Coverage aimed at holding governments around the world accountable for their commitment to the Alma-mater Declaration of 1979 4) Improving collaboration and partnership in the realization of the SDGs 5) Making the disaggregation of data on aging and the aging policies into the SDGs. 6) Developing health and social inclusion modules and interventions using implementation science in achieving Population Health Service, especially in underserved communities. 7) Combating ageism while promoting healthy aging through improving access to medication for chronically ill Older Persons especially from Underserved communities. 8) Combating global hunger and poverty amongst underserved communities through GCVSI's food distribution Program for the Homeless and refugees.
Confirmation of the activities of the organization at the regional, national or international level: Geriatric Care and Vulnerable Support Initiative has established a strong presence in various states in Nigeria in the field of Ageing, Maternal and Child mortality control in rural communities among low income families. Our Organization has signed memorandum of Understanding with Imo state Government through the Ministry of Health Gender Affairs and Social Development Owerri in areas like geriatric Care and data availability, promotion of ageing policies, fighting ageism, capacity building. We have been conducting data collection exercises in rural communities use in evaluating Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals' 3' (Accessible and affordable Health for all by 2030). Developing high level engagement with stake holders in pushing for the inclusion of ageing into the (SDGs) hence holding government accountable on Social Protection and Security for older persons. Our organization is working in collaboration with other coalition of civil societies in Nigeria to push for the rights of older person through legislation, advocacy, stakeholder’s engagements and more. We are working with government through the Primary Healthcare Development Agencies to conduct research on pregnant women birth place preference in rural communities in Nigeria hence developing intervention programs to mitigate maternal and newborn mortality in rural communities in Nigeria. Our Organization is a member of Geriatric Association of Nigeria, Gerontology Association of Nigeria, and Practical Aged Care.On regional levels Geriatric Care and Vulnerable Support Initiative is a member of the following bodies Stakeholders Group On Ageing (SGA) Africa, Africa Palliative Care Association, West Africa Institute of Ageing Research meanwhile our Organization belongs to the Global Alliance for the Rights of Older Persons hence we are engaging in regional and international platforms in pushing for policies integration and frameworks in the field of aging globally.

Description of the membership of the organization, indicating the total number of members: To become a member of Geriatric Care and Vulnerable Support Initiative, one must register and obtain voting right hence he or she can partake in all meetings and functions of the Organization. Members make annual contribution to support the organization. We have 4 board members and 4 Members of Advisory Council, 3 coordinating Managements staff, 30 paid volunteers and 62 non paid volunteers
